FEBRUARY
Iâm beginning to wonder if Pensalado has any type of weather besides, âYou donât get to have any feeling in your nose for the whole day.â For the rest of January, we hardly get any rain, but the chillâs incessant, and I find myself bundling up a lot more. February is no exception to the âJesus Christ, itâs freezing,â rule. Iâm amazed that I donât see icicles dangling from the roof when I go outside to do my chores.
The guests donât seem to mind, though. Nothingâs staving them off now. I learn that when Devin and Kyle went back home for Christmas, they took some time to write up advertisements and post contact information for the property, so it probably got plastered all over the good old Interwebs and peopleâs email lists and what not. I wouldnât be surprised if every time those two go to Hearnsville, Kyle brings along a stapler and a stack of flyers and goes around sticking the things to telephone poles and stop signs in the hopes of someone noticing.
In short, we are booked solid for February. Which, of course, means that I get very little free time, and now I get to be busboy for the bigger families who partake in the little nature wonderland that we have to offer. Everyone now has a daily list of jobs to tend to. Devinâs gotten even less lenient about the house cleaning, so sometimes, I find myself in the guest cabin twice a day when our clients are out and about, cleaning tables and sweeping floors and scrubbing sinks and making beds. I am one step away from becoming a hotel maid, and Iâm not alone. Even Rachelâs started to complain about how many times Devinâs asked her to mop the kitchen floor.
âI swear to God, itâs like one bread crumb falls, and Iâve got my cousin on me like a fucking vulture,â she gripes to me and Kyle, as she props the mop against the nearby rack of firewood after finishing yet another tedious soaking of the linoleum. Kyle and I are washing and drying dishes, and Iâm already getting a sore arm from trying to scrape away sticky rice and starch from a pan we used the night before. ââItâs just for business,â he says. âJust do it and stop whining,â he says. Yeah, Iâll stop whining after I take this broom and shove it right up your â â
âHeâs just trying to give the guests the best experience possible,â Kyle coaxes in his best little counselor voice, which sounds like a cross between an English doctor and a little old lady.
âThe way you side with him all the time, Kyle, it sounds like youâd like to give him the best experience possible, if you know what I mean,â Rachel sneers, finishing her sentence with a goofy wink.
I canât help it; I have to cram my face into the towel that Iâm using to dry dishes in order to muffle my laughter. But sheâs not done yet.
